REPAIR
MUSEUM
January 2022
Repair Museum is an online application that provides beneficial solutions for the environment and sustainability, offering users free repair video tutorials and remote video instruction, and encouraging users to donate unwanted items for recycling and reuse. In addition, Repair Museum provides opportunities for volunteers to help repair items and make connections with people in the community.
PROJECT STATEMENT
Repair Cafe is a volunteer organization based in Toronto that holds events at local community centers and schools to help people repair their broken items, including electronics, clothing, and books. To make a reservation, you can check their website for event dates and send an email. Then, bring your item to the offline event on the scheduled day. Repair Cafe was established with the aim of reducing waste and promoting a circular economy. However, the offline format has limited their growth potential. As a result, I aspire to create an online platform that will enable them to expand their reach and scale.
BEFORE DESIGN
This project went through several different phases.
First, I took a close look at the organization Repair Cafe, including how they operate, their stakeholders, user experience, etc. and asked a number of questions around them.
My design goal was to help the organization scale digitally, and why would I want to do that? How will scaling up be different from before? How should users use it?
The answers to these brainstorming sessions determined what features this project should have, and the final visual design.
For Repair Cafe Organization
For Improving
From the brainstorming stage, I determined the design direction for this project.
Teaching Videos
Volunteers can upload pre-recorded videos for users to easily search and find.
Parts Inventory
Users can search the inventory to see if the required parts are available and make requests or donate unused parts.
Online Booking
In addition to teaching videos, users can also book one-on-one remote video conferences or offline events. Volunteers will record the entire session and upload it as a teaching video after editing.
Personal Account
The personal account system facilitates the filling in of information such as email, phone number, and address.
STORYBOARD
STYLE GUIDES
The color scheme for Repair Museum was carefully chosen to reflect the identity and values of the Repair Cafe organization, as well as to create a visually appealing and accessible user interface.
-
The primary color, #25ACAB, is the main color used in the Repair Cafe logo and is associated with environmentalism, sustainability, and progress. It is a cool and calming shade of blue-green that evokes a sense of trust and reliability, which is essential for an online platform that encourages users to trust volunteers to repair their broken items.
-
The secondary color, #FBAD2E, is a bright and energetic shade of yellow that represents optimism, creativity, and innovation. It adds a playful and cheerful element to the color scheme, and it can help to draw users' attention to important elements on the website, such as buttons and call-to-action prompts.
-
The accent color, #EE5F31, is a warm and vibrant shade of red-orange that provides a bold contrast to the other colors in the scheme. It symbolizes energy, passion, and urgency, which are all important elements of the Repair Cafe mission to reduce waste and promote a circular economy. This color can be used sparingly to highlight key information or to create a sense of urgency when necessary.
-
Finally, the light background color, #FCF0E3, is a neutral and calming shade of off-white that allows the other colors in the scheme to stand out. It is easy on the eyes and helps to create a clean and minimalist design aesthetic, which is essential for a user-friendly interface.
Overall, the color scheme for Repair Museum was designed to create a cohesive and visually appealing interface that reflects the values and mission of the Repair Cafe organization, while also providing a user-friendly and accessible experience for users.
APPLICATION FEATURES
The application has three main functions: instructional videos, online booking, and parts request/donation. Users need to register an account and fill in personal information such as username, address, and phone number for shipping (if only watching instructional videos, address and other private information are not required).

If a user wants to try repairing an item, they can search for instructional videos first. We offer different categories for users to choose from, or they can use the search bar directly. If there is no instructional video the user needs, they can upload a short video showing the problem with the item. Volunteers can then help troubleshoot the problem and provide suggestions, such as whether an online consultation appointment is necessary.

When making a booking, the system displays the available time slots of volunteers responsible for the respective types of items after the user selects the item category. Another option is to book for Repair Cafe's offline events, where users can bring or mail their items to the event address for repair.

Repair Cafe's philosophy is to reduce waste and promote a circular economy by encouraging people to repair and reuse items through education and community action to reduce resource consumption and waste. Therefore, the app is also designed to align with Repair Cafe's philosophy of making it easy for more people to repair their items and reduce waste. By providing instructional videos, online reservations, and parts requests/donations, the app helps users restore items at home while also providing a platform for volunteers to share their knowledge and skills, promoting community collaboration and a circular economy.
